At the General Assembly, we are now in the final phase—focused almost entirely on the budget. None of the bills we are tracking are scheduled for committee hearings next week. Only the Government Operations and State and Local Government Committees are meeting to wrap up remaining business, while most activity has shifted to the House and Senate Finance Committees.

Budget negotiations are underway. The Governor has introduced a supplemental budget updating his original February proposal. While this serves as a starting point, lawmakers are also advocating for funding tied to advancing legislation (“bills behind the budget”) as well as other programs and priorities. Legislators may file budget amendments, which will be considered in the finance committees.

As a reminder, the state is required to maintain a balanced budget, so new investments often require reductions elsewhere.
The bills listed on our tracker reflect those that saw action this week or remain active. We will provide a comprehensive recap at the conclusion of the session.

TDC April 9 bill tracking

We expect the 114th General Assembly to “adjourn sine die” formally ending the two year session in the next two weeks.
